Senior Tax Manager / Tax Director

Our client, a multi-generational family office, is seeking a dedicated and experienced Senior Tax Manager or Tax Director to support the financial health and tax compliance of a sophisticated wealth management operation. This role reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer and requires a strategic thinker with a deep understanding of tax planning, compliance, and reporting, particularly in the context of family office services.

As the Senior Tax Manager or Tax Director, you will be responsible for tax-related compliance and administration across multiple family entities, ensuring adherence to Canadian and U.S. regulations. In this dynamic role, you’ll tackle a wide range of tax challenges, from navigating intricate cross-border regulations to analyzing various tax instruments that support a diverse array of asset classes. You will collaborate closely with internal team members and external advisors to provide seamless service, while anticipating and navigating complex tax issues and uncovering strategic opportunities to optimize the family’s investment outcomes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Tax Compliance and Administration: Manage comprehensive tax compliance (CRA, IRS, etc.), including preparing and filing T1, T2, T3, T3010, T1142, T1135, NR4, T5, GST/HST, and other applicable returns.
  • Strategic Tax Planning: Conduct in-depth tax research to support tax planning strategies for individuals, trusts, estates, and corporations within the family office.
  • Cross-Border Taxation: Coordinate with external advisors on cross-border compliance issues, including IRS filings and PFIC returns.
  • Investment Tax Analysis: Evaluate tax implications for offshore and domestic investment vehicles, with a focus on optimizing tax outcomes.
  • Proactive Advisory: Provide insight on evolving tax regulations, identify tax-saving opportunities, and recommend potential tax planning strategies.
  • Relationship Management: Foster supportive and effective relationships with family members, external advisors, and regulatory bodies.
Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business or Accounting; CPA, CA, or equivalent tax designation required.
  • Experience: 3-6 years as a Tax Manager or Tax Director, with strong tax technical skills, ideally from a family office or wealth management context.
  • Technical Expertise: In-depth knowledge of Canadian income tax legislation, and experience with U.S. tax compliance is an asset.
  • Skills: Strong organizational, communication, and relationship management skills, with a self-motivated approach to staying informed on emerging tax issues in wealth management.
